Description
WHEATON, IL---Connection of Friends is hosting its Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, September 6th beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Hope Presbyterian Church, (1771 S. Weisbrook Road, Wheaton). To RSVP for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, please contact Terry Kline at tkline@connectionoffriends.org.
Connection of Friends is a community-based program welcoming special needs adults over the age of 22 who have aged out of mandated education services as well as teens and young adults over the age of 16 currently enrolled in high school or in a transitional program. Connection of Friends is a place to socialize with an emphasis on life skill, volunteer and recreational activities
Programming offered includes the planning, shopping and preparing of a daily meal; volunteering in the community; and art, music therapy, gardening, product creation and fitness.
While vocational and life skill programs are taught and reinforced within the educational system, many of these learned skills are quickly lost because there are limited community-based programs available once students age out of mandated services. As this population matures, it becomes increasingly more difficult for parents to keep teenagers and young adults with special needs meaningfully engaged when not in school. Connection of Friends, a 501 (c) (3) organization, was created to provide a special place for social gathering and an opportunity for young adults with special needs to participate within their community.
