Community, NFP and Service Organizations
The American Cancer Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save lives!! We are creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays, by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against cancer.
We help people stay well by partnering with local organizations to promote prevention and early detection of cancer.
We help people get well through a variety of patient service programs that are offered at no cost to cancer patients in our community. Programs include wig boutiques, Look Good...Feel Better, Reach to Recovery, Road to Recovery and 24 hour assistance from a Cancer Information Specialist at 800-ACS-2345.
We find cures through a robust research program. We are the largest, non-governmental funder of cancer research in the county. 44 of the researchers we have funded have gone on to win the Nobel prize.
Finally, we fight back against cancer through a variety of events in our community. We have 2 events that serve the Wheaton community:
Relay For Life is a fundraising event where teams of families, friends, and coworkers come together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those we have lost to cancer, and fight back again the disease that has taken too much from too many.
This year's event will be June 14, 2013 at Glenbard South High School. www.RelayForLife.org/GlenEllynIL for more information.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is our annual 5K Breast Cancer walk. It will be held at Cantigny Park Sunday, October 20, 2013. MakingStridesWalk.org/DuPageIL for more info.
