Description
The Math and Computer Science Department at Wheaton College presents a lecture by geometer Dr. Thomas Banchoff titled "The Four-Dimensional Geometry and Theology of Salvador Dali." Dr. Banchoff has taught at Brown University for 47 years. He specializes in combinatorial and differential geometry of three and four dimensions. He served as the president of the Mathematical Association of America from 1999 to 2000. In 1996 he was awarded the prestigious Mathematical Association of America's Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. Artist Salvador Dali featured geometric images from the fourth dimension and catastrophe theory in several of his religious paintings. Dr. Banchoff's talk will focus on Dali's fascination with topics in mathematics and science as well as philosophy and theology. His presentation will also include accounts of personal interactions with Dali from their friendship during the mid '70s.
