Description
Georges Rouault was a 19th-century expressionist artist whose images portrayed the suffering in the world around him, colored by the tragedies of World War I. The haunting images in this exhibition take on the subject of suffering experienced by Christ as well as the daily suffering of all people. While often disconcerting in their raw, emotive appearance, Rouault's work is a faithful metaphor of hope through struggle. The strength of this work and the impact it had on the audience of his time made Rouault one of the most revered painters of the twentieth century.
