It is a very recent phenomenon that the majority of the world’s population now lives in cities. This fact has far-reaching implications in social, political, and economic spheres, but also profoundly impacts our spiritual lives. What does it mean to develop a spiritual practice in an environment divorced from the natural world? Where do we look for spiritual guidance in conditions utterly foreign to those in which the world’s religions took root? Spirituality has not changed. Our need right now is to recognize and adapt to new and challenging conditions.
Tim Boyd, president of the Theosophical Society, has been a student of the Ageless Wisdom since his encounter with Bill Laurence in 1973 which led to the founding of a spiritual community that was active in Chicago for twenty-five years. He has served on the national board of directors of the Theosophical Society and the Theosophical Order of Service.
