DESCRIPTION:The Center for Urban Engagement at Wheaton College presents a lecture by Dr. Michael Leo Owens. In the lecture\, titled "...'To Proclaim Freedom for the Prisoners': Mass Incarceration and Faith-Based Community Organizing\," Dr. Owens will explore the role of religious communities and institutions in addressing the challenge of mass incarceration. Owens is associate professor of political science at Emory University. His research and teaching interests include urban politics\, state and local politics\, political penology\, governance and public policy processes\, religion and politics\, and African American politics. He is the author of "God and Government in the Ghetto: The Politics of Church-State Collaboration in Black America" (University of Chicago Press\, 2007). His current book project is "Prisoners of Democracy\," a study of the politics\, policies\, and attitudes that diminish the citizenship of felons in the United States.
